Deep in a WSOP Main Event seat qualifier (top 10 move on to play for the seat in a larger championship tourney)
171 players entered, we're down to 20. Bunch of players limp for 800 chips (blinds 400/800 with a 100 ante) and we see a flop of:
39K rainbow.
I'm in the BB with J9 offsuit and check, the first two limpers check and the last limper bets 1,250 and leaves himself a little over 4K in his stack.
The pot size was over 4K when he made this bet. We have 10K and have him covered, what is your play in this spot?
My first concern is playing out of postion, and they are probably getting the rest of their stack in the pot. You have middle pair with the other 2 limpers still left to act. This doesn't make me happy.
In this case, I am probably folding because I only have to hit the top ten.
Actually, in a real tourney I am still probably folding because there are too many people left to act, and I can see the raiser having a K.
Did you feel that it was just a postion bet?
I misread it then. My bad. Given that the top 10 make the next level I might play this very conservative still and fold.
a flat call is useless and giving them a chance to improve on the turn. And you are flying blind. so, the only other move is to raise (I'm not shoving here most likey). And I'd probably make it a pretty hefty one. But then I just inflated the pot. Do I really want to do that??
What was the chip average at that point??? Because if it's around mine, I am probably coasting into 10th.

I agree we can't just check-call here. So for me it's either check-fold or check-raise (shove due to stack and pot size dynamics) Avg stack is around 8.5K so we're slightly above average, but not enough that I feel we can coast into 10th place
It might be tight -- but the blinds are gonna start eating people up. Which will probably be the next 5 spots. I would be watching the board closely. I'd probably make a move if in position.
But I think I could fly that 10k into 10th fairly easily.
I guess the questions I'd ask myself are:
Was that a position bet to steal?
How big will this pot get?
Was that a bet to induce a raise or some fool to flat call, then drop the hammer on the turn?
After playing with the person, what range do I put him on?
a weak king is very possiable, so do I want to risk some more of my stack with middle pair? When I really think I could make it to at least 10th with the stack I have.
And mostly importantly. . . .
Does he have a horse?????
So did you shove or fold?? I'm probably still folding from the details I know. Maybe hold off, and see what others think though.
The horse is just curious.
Hehehehehe He probably had K-9 and crushed the garden gnome LOL j/k
So you shoved. . .
Did you get a call? What did they show?

Right, but the vast majority of the time that I've seen this sort of play, it indicates a weak stab to try and snag the pot now. Sure, some times I'll run into a better hand and lose. But I still stand by my decision based on the situation
You should create a sister thread. same situation, but you have the villian's hand and situation.
could be interesting.
It's optimistic to think you have fold equity by shoving here if villain has a king worth leading. Calling is also bad because you have two players behind you to act and flatting allows them to call with a variety of hands that wouldn't leave you with much equity in a multi-way pot even if you did have the best hand. I say just fold and try to look for a better spot than this to look up this type of bet in the future.
