Another Saturday night session of poker was hopping down the street and I made the journey. My previous play had produced a 1st and 2nd in two tournies plus I turned $50 into $70 in the cash game.
This time around I put up $18 for the first tourney but failed to cash. The second tourney was a $5 buyin with a $1 bounty and unlimited rebuys for the first three levels, with an add-on afterwards.
We were closing in on the end of the third level and UTG min-raised to 200. EVERYONE called and I looked down at A8 offsuit in the BB. With my starting stack of 2K chips now around 1700, I made a play for the pot and shoved, figuring if I won I could add-on going into the next level, and if I lost I could rebuy and add-on.
Everyone folded except the SB who decided to gamble with me holding T6 offsuit. He was rewarded with a T on the river to force me to put another $9 into the game to remain in contention.
Eventually he picked up AQ in the SB and I had 44 in the BB and we got it all-in on the coin-flip and I lost that.
I also managed to lose KQ against 9T s00ted in the first tourney which sent me packing.
So, I was down $18 + $15 right off the bat, but managed to get a 3-handed dealers-choice $0.25/0.50 NL cash game started. I turned my $40 buyin there into $63, thanks to some Omaha hi/lo and Badeucy (half badugi/half 2-7 triple draw lowball combo game).
They decided to run a third tournament with a $20 buyin ($17 to the prize pool, $3 to cover the dedicated dealer, pizza and beverages), but the field had thinned as a number of players had left early, leaving us 6-handed.
I managed to do well here, with 30K chips in play I had close to half that 4-handed, but only the top 2 paid.
When I got heads-up my opponent had only 3K with blinds at 500/1000 and I had the remaining 27K. Put it all-in but I was dominated, his K8 to my 78 and he doubled up.
Next hand I shoved with KJ and he called with 69 and I flopped a J and held to claim victory and the $67 top prize.
Would have preferred to play cash games more, but too many people wanted tournies or left early waiting for tournies to finish to get the cash games going.
Still, happy with another fun time with a slight profit on top.
The below are some non-politically correct comments from this local game, if you are easily offended you are advised to look elsewhere:
There's a guy who looks/sounds Jamaican (he's actually from the Bahamas) so I'm always dropping jokes at his expense:
ME: Hey, I saw that movie about you the other day
HIM: What movie?
ME: Minority Report
Then I also mentioned he must have Billy Ocean's Carribbean Queen on loop in his car.
And our freckled ginger dealer asked me what the difference between a pizza and a jew was. But I had already heard that one before (a pizza doesn't scream when you toss it in the oven)
This bunch really reminds me of my home games back in Massachusetts, everyone had a sick, twisted sense of humor and I loved it.
Unfortunately when I move to our new place in October, I'll be a bit too far to consider hitting up this game on a regular basis. But, right now it's a minute down the street, so I'll enjoy it for another few months at least.
